USA Cycling Awarded the 2025 INFORMS Edelman Award for Data-Driven Olympic Gold Strategy

BALTIMORE, MD, April 7, 2025 – INFORMS, the world’s largest association for professionals and students in operations research (O.R.), AI, analytics and data science, announced it has awarded USA Cycling its 2025 Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Advanced Analytics, Operations Research and Management Science, for its use of operations research (O.R.) and analytics in elite sports performance. With Project 4:05, USA Cycling transformed race strategy and athlete preparation, enabling the Women’s Team Pursuit to win gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Generous health insurance plans encourage overtreatment, but may not improve health

CATONSVILLE, MD, June 2, 2017 – Offering comprehensive health insurance plans with low deductibles and co-pay in exchange for higher annual premiums seems like a good value for the risk averse, and a profitable product for insurance companies. But according to a forthcoming study in a leading scholarly marketing journal, the INFORMS journal Marketing Science, such plans can encourage individuals with chronic conditions to turn to needlessly expensive treatments that have little impact on their health outcomes. This in turn raises costs for the insurer and future prices for the insured.

A study by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder and Santa Clara University aimed to shed light on whether or not companies would benefit by paying customers to review their products and services. The report, which will appear in the INFORMS journal Marketing Science, found that paying for reviews was simply a bad idea.
